Taming the Paper Monster: The College Game
(And It Starts in 8th Grade!)

[Taming the Paper Monster was the predecessor of
College Countdown.

Having worked with high school students for over twenty years in the field of motivation and goal setting, I can overwhelmingly recommend Taming the Paper Monster for students and their parents. Many students are great dreamers, but not all of them have the tools to work toward their goals. This guide gives them a start to finish the road map in charting their own path. Bravo!

Traditionally the most daunting and frustrating activity a student and family sets out to accomplish is the college search. Anything that can minimize this anxious time is appreciated. Having a carefully planned guide is a tremendous asset. VonGruben’s Taming the Paper Monster accomplishes this on many levels. It’s a must for parents!

Taming the Paper Monster should be on the night table of every parent who is helping their adolescent get through the college admissions process. It is one of the most user friendly resource guides for families I have ever seen in 25 years as a counselor/guidance supervisor. Jill VonGruben has chosen a format that is concise, easy to access, yet the book is comprehensive in scope.

Taming the Paper Monster walks us through the eighth grade to post high school with checklists, sample resumes, and therapeutic tips on dealing with the emotional roller coaster from late in the junior year through May of the senior year.

Clearly, this is a new approach to helping parents and students deal with the anxiety of college admission issues. It is a most refreshing effort.

During my thirty-five years in education, the past twenty-one as a high school principal, I have reviewed materials designed to help parents cope with the college application process. I believe that VonGruben’s Taming the Paper Monster will take the stress out of that process. The format is interesting, easy to follow and very user friendly. The book belongs in every school library and guidance office reference section.

Taming the Paper Monster is beautifully told and organized for teens and parents to keep a record of all the "stuff" that goes into this intense process. VonGruben has made the process as painless as possible. This practical, down-to-earth guide helps families successfully work their way through the confusing process of college selection and admission beginning in the 8th grade and continuing through the first year of college.

Taming is so practical that I have recommended the book to parents in the parent education classes I conduct and to teachers in the staff development classes I teach.

VonGruben’s Taming the Paper Monster helps students and parents prepare for college, meet deadlines and avoid the pitfalls and problems along the way and complete a successful first year of study.

VonGruben’s Taming the Paper Monster’s popularity is based on factual information presented from a parent’s perspective. As such, it holds a special appeal for parents facing the college admission challenge.

Within a few days of receiving a copy of Taming the Paper Monster, we were conducting a series of meetings for school counselors. We put the copy on a table of items to share. We were asked by many of those in attendance how they could obtain a copy of this publication. We know many of those who attended were going to purchase copies of their own.

Many parents could find this information useful as they plan to send their son/daughter to post secondary education.

We have used Taming the Paper Monster as a resource with parents, students, and teachers at the intermediate, middle school, and high school grade levels. The book provides practical and very helpful information for parents who want to make the right decisions and do the correct things in order to get their child into the best college possible. I would highly recommend it to anyone with a student or child approaching the college years!

The search for the right college or university, the program that best meets the student’s needs, the application process and the search for scholarships are just a few of the traumatic issues facing parents and students. Schools provide assistance but much of the burden is on the family, the parent and student.

Taming the Paper Monster is a practical guide for parents and students to help prepare them for these challenges. It is a practical step-by-step approach that takes the family through the planning process for high school, the search for colleges, scholarships and through all the other potential roadblocks that one might face leading up to this important decision. It is certainly a book that I wish I had had in planning for my children as they entered high school and they began their search for colleges. Not only is it an excellent guide for parents and students, it provides valuable information and guidance for educators as well.

If preparing for college is a maze of confusing forms and procedures, Jill VonGruben’s book, Taming the Paper Monster, will help you cut through red tape like a hot knife glides through butter. Unlike other books of this type, Taming will benefit both adolescents and their parents. Filled with anecdotes, forms, dates and reminders of "what’s due when", this book offers realistic advice for playing the college game with gusto! Buy it for your college-bound teen...and for yourself!

THE COLLEGE COUNTDOWN
The Parent's and Student's Survival Kit
For the College Admissions Process
By
Jill F. VonGruben

"I found College Countdown to be an effective resource in three roles I play in my like: parent, teacher and counselor. The advice given is realistic, specific, complete and honest, and students who read it will find themselves much better prepared for their lives on campus. I recommend this book highly for anyone serious about wanting to prepare for college while they are still in high school."--James R. Deslisle, Ph.D. Kent State University

For parents with teenagers, there is nothing more daunting today than sending a kid to college. You've got to know your ACT from your SAT, your TOEFL from your TWE, your AP from your IB, and you've got to know exactly when to file your FAFSA or your kid has no chance for financial aid. In fact, if you wait until your kid's first year of high school to begin figuring it all out, according to Jill F. VonGruben, you're likely to flunk the most important parenting test of all - getting your kid off to a good start in life.

In her new book, THE COLLEGE COUNTDOWN: The Parent's and Student's Survival Kit for the College Admissions Process, education specialist and mother of two, Jill F. VonGruben offers a variety of winning strategies, and step-by-step game plans for parents and students to find the right college at the right price. Whether your kid is an artist, an athlete, a top-of-the-class scholar, a turnaround project, or even homeschooled, Jill F. VonGruben offers comprehensive, yet highly detailed, blueprints and action plans for getting any kid anywhere he or she wants to go.

What are colleges looking for today? How important are grades and class rank, as opposed to leadership and creativity? When are the important entrance exams? Which ones should students take and when do they need to register? When should college planning begin? How much does a college education cost today? Are scholarships and loans readily available? How does a student qualify for financial aid? What can parents do to help their kids qualify for scholarships and loans?

The procedures, paperwork, and price tag of college today are so overwhelming that students delay and parents despair - the process seems almost impossible. With humor and compassion, mixed with unerring advice, Jill F. VonGruben not only lays out game plans for every type of student, she offers surprising insights into the otherwise bewildering process, giving hope to all who would not be valedictorian.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jill F. VonGruben, M.A., is the parent of two college students. It was her experiences with her children that quickly brought her to the realization that there was not a quick and easy guide to help a family through the process. Thus, the idea for THE COLLEGE COUNTDOWN was born, first self-published as Taming the Paper Monster: The College Game (And It Starts in 8th Grade!). THE COLLEGE COUNTDOWN was realized from not only her family's experiences, but from interviews with hundreds of parents and college admissions representatives.

VonGruben has spent 20 years in an advocacy role in gifted education. For the last eight years, she has specialized in the area of high school academics. She served on the Board for the St. Louis Association of Gifted Education, the founding Board of the Parent Advocates for Gifted Education, as middle school and high school liaisons, and was instrumental in founding the PTO for Rockwood School District's Center for Creative Learning.

VonGruben lives in the St. Louis, Missouri area with her husband and her two daughters who come back home at school breaks for meals, spare change and laundry. When she is not writing or speaking about THE COLLEGE COUNTDOWN, VonGruben enjoys reading, computers and gardening. Learning to play golf is her next recreational goal.
