Get Organized Skills

Don’t underestimate the importance of having these skills under your belt.

When you’re in college, you won’t have the luxury of a parent or teacher hounding you to make sure that you complete all your assignments on time and prepare for tests. If you get in the habit of studying well now, not only will it help you get through high school successfully, good study skills will also become one of your basic survival skills for college.

Use planners, calendars, and notes -- whatever system works best for you to stay organized and turn assignments, etc. in on time. Think about color coding your studies and activities. Include in that coding a system of prioritizing. All time outside of school needs to blocked out and prioritized. When you allocate your time, make sure you have realistic expectations in your time requirements. It's always better to overestimate the time it takes to get an assignment completed rather than schedule so much in an evening that you're up to 2am!

Getting organized also may extend to your room and eventually to your dorm room. You don't need to change overnight into a neat freak, and that really isn't the goal. The goal is to be organized enough not to lose assignments, your planner and your research.

If you need help to get organized in the first place, ask for help. You can ask a friend to help. Then you can return the organizing favor!

Organizing can help you get yourself "unstuck" when you are suffering from writer's or studying block.
